These new varieties are marketed as\u00a0<\/span>\u2018shallot grown from seed\u2019<\/b>, so consumers can make the distinction with planted varieties, which are now marketed as\u00a0<\/span>\u2018traditional shallots’<\/i><\/b>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”6623″ img_size=”600×450″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”right”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Latin botanical name of the ancestral shallot plant (Allium ascalonicum<\/i>) has now been officially changed to:\u00a0<\/span>Allium cepa<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>gr.aggregatum<\/i>. This applies to traditional shallot, and to a lesser extent to shallot grown from seed. As for onions, they are now officially referred to as:\u00a0<\/span>Allium cepa<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>gr.cepa<\/i>.<\/p>\n

It is important that the consumer should be able to easily identify these different varieties as they have a very distinctive flavour.\u00a0<\/span>Traditional shallot<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>has a pronounced flavour (which gastronomes also describe as more subtle) and is often used in Haute Cuisine. In France, traditional shallots are marketed under the name of\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Traditional Shallot\u2019<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n

By purchasing\u00a0<\/span>certified plants,<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>gardeners are sure to be growing\u00a0<\/span>traditional shallot<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>with an intense and refined flavour.
